Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects has won the design competition for the new Finsbury Leisure Centre in North London.

The competition, organised by RIBA and the local Islington Council, saw several high-profile UK-based firms on the shortlist, including Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Grimshaw Architects.

The winning design, described as ‘the most creative and forward thinking idea for the new civic building’, incorporates a sleek red sawtooth façade that enhances the geometric shape of the leisure centre.

Completed by expanses of glazing, which provide a connection between the interior and exterior, the project is just part of a wider regeneration project, including social housing and improved public space.
