Design magazine Dezeen has taken a look back at the best public buildings of 2016, highlighting the most innovative museums and culture spots completed last year.
The ‘top ten’ includes buildings from Europe, North America, and Asia; famous architects Herzog & de Meuron have three designs on the list, including Tate Modern Switch House in the UK, Elphilharmonie in Germany, and the Musée Unterlinden in France.
The North American entries include David Adjaye’s Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), which has an intricate bronze façade across three distinct tiers, with pockets of glazing adding interest to the design.
The one building on the list from Asia is the innovative Dinosaur Egg Geological Museum by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, while other designs recognised by Dezeen include Port House by Zaha Hadid Architects, which consists of an eye-catching glazed structure sitting atop a former fire station.
